5 Strategies to Stay Focused: When decluttering and organizing your home

There are a lot of times in life we get so busy and caught up with taking care of our families and everything that is involved with them that it is very easy to lose our focus along the way.
This is especially true if you have lots of  little ones around you most of your day.

How many of you have started out making lunch for your family in the kitchen and within five minutes you find yourself in the bathroom cleaning out the cabinet under the sink? Be honest!  I have to confess this has happened to me. It’s really one of those moments that I just throw my head back and laugh, or instead I could scream and cry but that’s just not as fun.

So looking at how busy our lives are already how about adding clutter into it. Then how much harder does it become to stay focused?

It’s even harder to stay focused and make good decisions when you have clutter all around and if you were to take a minute to really think about it, your clutter makes your decisions for you such as…

  • Where you eat your dinner – If you can’t find your kitchen table because it usually has clutter on it, you are more than likely going to have to split up the family in different rooms to eat or gather in the living room.
  • How many times your friends and family are invited over – If your clutter is taking over your home you may not want to have anyone over because you may be ashamed or embarrassed to let them see it.
  • How much extra money you spend – If you can’t find those bills that need to be paid, you will more likely be paying out more money in late fees. Or perhaps not being able to see what you have as far as food  in the pantry, toiletries in the bathroom, or office supplies will cause you to many times buy unnecessary duplicate’s which is money that could be spent on something  else or saved.
  • How much time and energy you have to focus on your family – Having a home with a lot of clutter in the way will always use more time and energy just because it’s in the way, you can’t find what you are looking for quickly, and causes more stress, in the end causes you to want to go hide away from it all.

5 Strategies to Stay Focused: When decluttering and organizing your home

  • Focus on one area at a time – Don’t do the bunny hop and jump from room to room. You will not get results and just become frustrated and tired.
  • Set goals – Set out and plan what you are going to work on each day of the week.
  • Make rewards – When you know that you will be getting something you really want or like when finished with a certain task, you will more likely complete it.
  • Have friends and family work with you and hold you accountable – Having someone know what you want done and when you want it done will help you stay on track because they will be asking how your progress is going and encouraging you along the process.
  • Give yourself time limits – We won’t be able to do all of our decluttering in one day. So set a time of about 10 – 15 minutes a day or at a time so you don’t lose energy or motivation by going too long.
