3 Easy Steps to Start Decluttering Your Home Today

In my experience in decluttering my own home the “what” has always been easier than the “how.”

In one way or another I always knew “what” needed to be decluttered. Whether it was by the kid’s toys overflowing in the hallways, stacks of mail taking up any given counter, or not being able to find what I needed or wanted right away.

Even after I found the “what”, I was still stuck, held up by the“how”. “How” was I suppose to fix it?

I am going to share with you “how” I accomplish decluttering in my home each and everyday.

It’s not going to be impossible for you to do nor is it going to take a lot of time or money. Neither of which do I have a lot of and if you have kids like I do then you probably don’t either. So here it comes, sit back and relax as I explain how to “declutter on purpose.”

All it takes is just three easy steps and about ten to fifteen minutes a day. Yeah I know, you’re probably thinking to yourself that you have heard this before, but don’t stop here, finish reading and give it a try for yourself because today you’re going to declutter on purpose.

Not by chance, not by luck, and definitely not because it was done for you. Trust me it’s going to be a little difficult in the beginning but nothing that a strong, willing person like you can’t handle.

So here they are, the real easy and self explanatory three steps…

1. Pick it up
2. Decide
3. Then put it where it belongs

It’s just as simple as that. Seems easy enough, right? Well, I’m sure you have some questions about what I mean and how to use them so it works for you, so I’m going to explain each one in more detail.

But before I do that I want to show you how easy it is and how you can get started today by doing an exercise with me. Are you up for the challenge? Great, let’s get started.

1. Find a timer and set it for one minute or use a clock.
2. Look around the room that you’re in right now and find one item (it can be big or small) that is frustrating to look at or that you know      doesn’t belong there or maybe even a piece of trash that has been neglected for a while. Find something that you have been meaning      to pick up but because of lack of time or motivation you just haven’t done it yet.
3. When you have located that item, start your timer and do the next three steps in one minute.
4. Pick up the item.
5. Decide where that item should go, whether it be the trash, another room, or if it needs to stay in the room that you are in.
6. After deciding, go put it where it belongs.

How did it turn out? Where you able to do that one thing in one minute? If so, you did a great job and you have one less item cluttering your home. Congratulations!

I recommend to do about fifteen minutes a day. That really means that if you do one item per minute, you could declutter your home fifteen items a day.

That may not really sound like a whole lot, taking into consideration, the amount of clutter you have to sort through, but this will get you started in forming a habit of taking action, decluttering a few items everyday.
